Apples: Not Only the Forbidden Fruit!

... “An apple a day keeps the doctor away”. ...and that has proven to be something more than just a simple old saying. Apples nutritive properties are responsible for reducing the risk of suffering heart attacks, for controlling cholesterol and some have even said that it helps to lose weight. Moreover, recent advanced studies blame apples responsible for preventing the development of colon cancer, lung cancer and prostate cancer.

Scientists have discovered that most of the chemicals found in the skin and flesh of the apples are potential in the fight against cancer. These chemicals are known as polyphenols and flavanoids. They are rich in anti-oxidant properties. Their ability against cancer resides in the fact that they mop up every molecule responsible for cell damage, which can trigger the disease. This property has previously been known as exclusive from vitamin C, but through these studies, researchers found out that 100g of apple equal 1,500mg of vitamin C.

Moreover, these studies showed that those chemicals are anti-allergenic, anti-inflammatory, anti-viral, and of course, anti-carcinogenic. In order to prove this, the scientists used colon cancer cells that were grown in the laboratory. Inhere, researchers found that the phytochemicals from the skin of the apples inhibited the reproduction of the cells by 43 %. An extract from the apple flesh inhibited those cells by 29 %. This same test was done over human liver cancer cells and the effect caused by apples was even more pronounced.

Most researchers agreed on the fact that the mechanism that fruits possess to protect the organism from several illnesses is yet unknown. Still, apples are known to be the most beneficial fruit. So, remember, they are good-looking, delicious, tasty and healthy... eat as much apples as you can and you will not regret it!
