Organic Food: A New Option for Our Health

With numerous battles going on in this late times, all dealing with health and weight issues, organic food has become a massive interest. To speak in simpler terms, organic food is the type of food that was produced without pesticides or chemical fertilizers (in the case of vegetables) and animals have been reared without growth hormones or antibiotics. Nevertheless, ever since organic food became a fashion, the commercial demand is so high that supermarkets count on a huge incentive to abuse the standards set by the US governments. In here is where all the polemic starts.

Those who are in favor of organic food, found themselves in a curious mixture of the ideologies and the science. Scientists argue that all the crops that grew without chemical fertilizers and animals which were reared without the use of antibiotics or hormones are healthier for human beings as well as for the planet. On the other hand, ideologists defend the production of organic food, since it is a stand against the new economic order, junk food and agribusiness.

People who are against, or not completely convinced about the use of organic food, argue that for some reason it is more expensive and that its nutritional value is not the one most believe. Now, there is a reason for this. Organic food is more expensive because since it does not use fertilizers, the cares and labor it requires is greater. Moreover, the farms in which organic food grows are smaller than conventional farms. The comments about the nutritional value of organic food are still in the middle of the mist. Most of the studies run in the matter were not conducted by any scientist or expert in the area. Anyhow, the best studies have shown consistency in a high presence of vitamin C, iron, magnesium and less presence of toxic nitrates in organic food. Moreover, since organic products have a lower water content, its minerals and other nutrients are more concentrated than in conventional products.

Antioxidants play an important role in this fight. The faster growth of fertilized crops makes the plants focus their resources for growth rather than for producing antioxidants. Now, the question that always comes up is how significant these nutritional facts are. Nutritionists affirm that no matter whether the food is organic or not, a well-formulated diet is all what you need to suffice your body of enough nutrients. Supporters of organic food maintain that through continuous consumption, small advantages could be significant over time.

No matter what side you decide to follow on this topic, what is true is that as consumers we have many options from where to choose. Our health must be our primary thought when we eat. We must observe which option is the one that fits us better and from that point on, decide what type of diet we are going to follow.
