“The Health Colonel” Enlivens Seniors at the Coconut Creek Community Center

(PRWEB) December 21, 2005 -- Retired Army Reserve Lt. Colonel Bob Weinstein, who is a well known speaker, writer and beach boot camp instructor, inspired and motivated the senior citizens of the City of Coconut Creek in South Florida at the Coconut Creek Community Center to take charge of their health and focus on what they can do and not on what they can’t.

With high energy and humor Bob took the seniors on a one hour interactive health and fitness experience at the Coconut Creek Community Center that included inspirational stories and tips on healthy eating, exercise and emotional fitness.

As with many of his speaking engagements real life stories accompany his talk. He told the story about the 9 year old who was terminally ill with cancer and yet requested that the Make-A-Wish Foundation build a rock climbing wall in his memory for his classmates. The message was about the importance of focusing on others.

Another story was about a grandfather in Italy who outlived his family and was alone and lonely.

He said to himself, “I want to overcome my loneliness and have a family again.” So he puts an ad in the local paper which read “Grandfather looking to be adopted by family”.

The response was so overwhelming that he eventually found a loving family. He ended up on radio and television and his ad ran on the front page of several newspapers. The message was to focus on what can be done and that there is always something we can undertake to improve our circumstances. He was able to place an ad and express what he wanted. He overcame his loneliness.

Colonel Weinstein also discussed a very basic tool that just about every senior citizen can use and has access to, a telephone. He challenged them not to wait for someone else to call but to take the initiative to seek contact with others and to especially call those who seem to be a little on the shy side so that no one is left out. The telephone is an excellent tool to perform volunteer work focusing on helping others.

“Use the buddy system and keep the body moving. Work the mind. Seek and take advantage of every opportunity to praise and encourage others and watch your own ‘happiness meter’ go up. Focus on what you can do.”

One of the attendees came up to Bob right after the speaking engagement and stated that the most important tip on exercise she received as someone who has limited range of motion is that body weight exercises can be safely modified making it possible for everyone to keep working the body in the range of motion that is possible for them.

“Whether it’s performing squats, dips or stretching, a simple modification has now made it possible for me to finally get back to a regular complete body exercise program. I always was under the impression that if I cannot perform a squat with the complete range of motion I therefore cannot do the exercise. This has given me new hope at my age of 70.”
