ConsumerLab.com Report on X32 Chromium Proves False
Whippany, NJ (December 2, 2005) – In the recently released report, “Product Review: Chromium,” ConsumerLab.com, an independent laboratory, reviewed popular dietary supplements, including TRIMSPA X32. Today, TRIMSPA announced that the highly publicized report’s findings on its X32 product have been proven false by an independent third-party research laboratory, American Analytical Chemistry Laboratories Corp. The third-party’s research tested X32 tablets from the same batch ConsumerLab.com claims to have used.
The ComputerLab.com Report’s findings, which falsely state that TRIMSPA X32 provides “42% more chromium” than on its label and “a small amount of hexavalent chromium (0.4%), a potential carcinogen and toxin,” have appeared in such prestigious news and information sources as O (The Oprah Magazine), CNN, Hearst Corporation’s WBAL-TV in Baltimore, NBC Network affiliates across the country, to name a few.
Contacting TRIMSPA in early October, The Oprah Magazine indicated that it was preparing a piece about TRIMSPA X32 and one of its ingredients, Chromium. “We were very forthcoming with the information they requested; we have nothing to hide,” said a TRIMSPA representative. “We had no idea that the ConsumerLab.com findings were involved until CNN contacted us a month later, on November 15. That was the first time we heard about the Report on Chromium and the ConsumerLab.com press release on its findings.”
With only a few hours to respond to CNN’s inquiry, TRIMSPA reviewed the study and issued its statement. Said TRIMSPA’s representative, “Batch testing records conclusively demonstrate the ConsumerLab.com Report’s findings were categorically false. TRIMSPA ensures that it meets label claims by testing chromium twice – first by the original chromium supplier, and second by the manufacturer.”
Despite confidence in results from its rigorous testing requirements, TRIMSPA commissioned an independent, third-party laboratory to confirm or dispel the ComputerLab.com findings. Results from this test, which used tablets from the same batch tested in the ConsumerLab.com report, confirmed X32’s label accurate: TRIMSPA X32 contains 74.56 micrograms compared to the X32 label’s 75 micrograms of trivalent Chromium.
With proof that the per-tablet, trivalent Chromium content matches the TRIMSPA X32 label, the maximum daily dosage total adjusts to 447.36 micrograms. This completely dispels the ConsumerLab.com findings that the daily dosage yields a total 641 micrograms of trivalent Chromium.
It is this number that ComputerLab.com links to liver and kidney toxicity with long-term daily use of Chromium in amounts over 600 micrograms. What they fail to acknowledge is that no Tolerable Upper Level (UL) for Chromium is or has been set by the Institute of Medicine (IOM). They also fail to acknowledge that a 150-pound person would have to consume 95,200 milligrams of Chromium each day to reach the level of toxicity necessary to reduce liver weight. This is based on an Environmental Protection Agency (EPA) referenced study on the toxic and carcinogenic effects of chromium which reported that the highest level of chromium tested, 1,400 mg/kg per day, caused a reduction in liver weight in rats.
The ComputerLab.com Report also stated that X32 contains a small amount of hexavalent chromium. However, in a report from the independent, third-party laboratory, American Analytical Chemistry Laboratories Corp., hexavalent Chromium was “Not Detected” by its assay methodology.
In short, TRIMSPA X32’s Chromium ingredient is non-toxic and non-carcinogenic. It is solely trivalent Chromium, manufactured from chromic chloride that is certified 100% chromic chloride.
“Safety and customer satisfaction are of the utmost importance to TRIMSPA,” said the Company’s representative. “We would like to applaud all work that helps to keep consumers safe, but this Report has distorted facts, offered incomplete information, and painted only partial pictures.”
Contacted by media across the county about the ConsumerLab.com Chromium Report, TRIMSPA commented, “Unfortunately the damage has been done and TRIMSPA’s name has been wrongly tarnished,” adding, “The only appropriate action is to provide the truth to the public, and demand that ConsumerLab.com acknowledge that TRIMSPA X32 is both safe and effective. And that requires ConsumerLab.com and the media who have reported incorrect data to report the truth and help mend the situation.”
TRIMSPA has a proven track record of compliance with all industry standards and stands by all its products and claims. The Company plans to take proper legal action where appropriate to help rectify the situation.
