Small Counter-Current Swimming Pool Brings Joy and Healing to Special Needs Child

Aston, PA (PRWEB) December 1, 2005 -- For most children, playing in the water is just one of their many joys. For three-year-old Rowan Lindley-Harker, swimming is much more. It is therapy, exercise, and her main source of joy, freedom, and stimulation.

Three years ago, the Harker family was enjoying the arrival of their daughter Rowan. However, just four days later tragedy struck when a car accident left Rowan with brain damage and two dislocated hips. Due to her injuries, Rowan was not able to move her torso for the first ten months of her life. This meant that she could not develop as a normal child does. By the time she was able to begin moving, her body had grown, but her muscle development had not kept pace, making learning to move very difficult.

Hydrotherapy greatly improved Rowan’s life. In the water, Rowan can move freely and build muscle tone painlessly. Still, even finding the right environment for hydrotherapy for Rowan proved difficult. She needed the water at exactly the right temperature: a Jacuzzi was too hot, impeding her movement and a regular pool too cold, making her uncomfortable quickly. For her parents, the solution was the Endless Pool, which due to its size, can easily and economically be kept at the ideal temperature.

Measuring just 8’x15’, the Endless Pool, often called a treadmill for swimmers, provides all the benefits of a full-size pool in a fraction of the space. It is compact enough to fit virtually anywhere, inside or out, allowing year-round swimming even in homes with limited space. The Endless Pool’s current is fully adjustable, making it ideal for water therapy and exercise for individuals of all abilities.

“The Endless Pool is the only place where Rowan experiences the pure joy that is all kids’ birthright,” said Christine Harker. “When Rowan is in the water, she lights up. She moves her body freely and with delight, splashing and kicking. With the Endless Pool, Rowan can swim everyday at the right temperature for her. In addition, it allows us to stimulate her with a moderate current, helping her build muscle. She is much healthier, her appetite is better, and she has more muscle.”

The Endless Pool’s added benefit is it allows Christine, once a competitive runner, to exercise regularly again, while still watching Rowan. “I can swim with Rowan in the spa room with me — and get a full body workout. Unlike the hard mileage on the road and pushing myself with weights, I can work very hard in the pool and finish without the aches and injuries that used to sideline me several weeks out of the year,” stated Christine.

Endless Pools, Inc., headquartered in Aston, PA, a suburb of Philadelphia, was founded in 1988 by James Murdock to manufacture and sell counter-current swimming pools for residential and commercial use. Over the last seventeen years, more than 9,000 Endless Pools have been sold in the United States and 40 countries.
