California's Active Lifestyle Takes a Toll on Feet, Especially for Seniors

While active seniors increasingly refuse to let age stand in the way of athletics and physical fitness, aging does present unique challenges, especially with regard to joints and feet. Podiatrists urge fitness buffs to take their age into consideration and exercise caution when exercising or engaging in a sport.

(PRWEB) July 7, 2005 -- Southern California's dry, balmy climate has been attracting settlers and visitors ever since Spanish explorers discovered it in 1542. More than four hundred years later, California has come to represent an entire way of life, one that's tantalizingly different from the rest of the country.

With its relaxed attitude and breathtaking scenery, it's no wonder California is a haven for tourists, especially those who enjoy sports. ESPN writer Jim Caple has called California "the center of the sports universe." Outdoors enthusiasts can be seen virtually everywhere, surfing, playing golf and tennis, or heading to the mountains for snowboarding or skiing. Not surprising is the dramatic increase in the number of participants in those sports over 55. According to a recent survey by American Sports Data, Inc., a company that specializes in sports participation and fitness research, baby-boomers and seniors are "transforming the landscape of physical fitness."

While active seniors increasingly refuse to let age stand in the way of athletics and physical fitness, aging does present unique challenges, especially with regard to joints and feet. Podiatrists urge fitness buffs to take their age into consideration and exercise caution when exercising or engaging in a sport.

For example, as we age, our feet become longer and wider, known as "splaying." Ligaments in our feet begin to collapse and arches fall as the result of both gravity and wear and tear. The process is so gradual, it often goes unnoticed, and many individuals make the mistake of continuing to wear the same shoe size, rather than adjusting for these changes. Podiatrists agree that poorly-fitted shoes are a major cause of many foot complaints, including foot callus. Other signs of aging feet are loss of cushioning in the fat pads on the balls of our feet, as well as loss of moisture. "Dry foot" syndrome and cracked heels are common.

Dr. Jack Morgan is a Monterey Park, California, podiatrist and podiatric surgeon who has lectured around the country on foot problems ranging from congenital foot defects in infants to problems specific to the elderly and diabetic. According to Dr. Morgan, "Out of every 50 patients I see, 10% have problems with dry, scaly or cracked skin on their feet and increased thickness to skin, which takes the form of either foot calluses or corns." He adds, "Among the many products for dry feet, only one, Callex® Callus Ointment, contains natural plant enzymes, which have proven to be remarkably effective for softening and thinning calluses, exfoliating dry cracked heels and moisturizing dry, scaling skin."

Newly patented, acid-free Callex® Callus Ointment is being recommended and sold by Dr. Morgan and other podiatrists around the country. Distributed by Xenna Corporation, Callex Ointment has been shown in consumer studies to significantly reduce callus, dry, flaking skin and cracking on soles and heels within 15 to 30 days. Callex moisturizes dry, rough or flaky skin, and exfoliates and thins callused areas, while leaving normal skin unaffected and is safe for diabetic use.

Xenna CEO C.J. Buck, says, "Callex is a refreshing exfoliant for callus and dry, cracked heels, formulated with natural enzymes. It's free of acids, mineral oil, colorants and lanolin and is excellent for sport, brace and work-related calluses, whether on feet or hands. Callex also softens and smoothes ragged, thick or hardened fingernail cuticles." The 1.75 oz. jar is a one to two month supply, and is money-back guaranteed, as are all of Xenna's products.

Dr. Bruce Bitcover, a Lawrenceville, NJ, podiatrist says, "This product is a real winner. Eighty percent of my patients have some type of foot callus. There are no side effects and the ointment is easy to use. I recommend Callex for use anywhere on the feet or where thickened skin exists." Seniors are urged to be as active as possible and products like Callex Ointment help assure that outdoor activities remain enjoyable.

Xenna also distributes podiatrist-recommended NonyX® Nail Gel for yellow, dark or discolored nails. NonyX Gel is a topical, easy-to-use gel that breaks down and removes keratin debris - the discolored, yellow or thick granular buildup under nails which is the actual source of nail discoloration. It softens keratin debris using natural ethanoic acid, and permits it to be scraped out from under the nail after about four weeks. Once keratin debris is removed, NonyX Gel keeps nails looking clear and attractive with regular use.
